Certification of Powder Coating Plants in accordance with DIN 55633 and DIN 55634

DIN 55633 / DIN 55634 in the Coating Industry

The certification processes according to DIN 55633 and DIN 55634 provide coating companies with the opportunity to optimize and monitor their processes and procedures in accordance with established quality standards. By adhering to these norms, businesses can demonstrate their competence and reliability in the coating industry. We, at the IFO Institute for Surface Technology, offer these certification processes for your company – please reach out to us.

What are the specific Contents and Application Areas of Standards DIN 55633 and DIN 55634?

Both DIN 55633 and 55634 standards are applicable to the corrosion protection of load-bearing components made of unalloyed or low-alloy steel. Similar to international standards such as DIN EN 12944 – Liquid Coatings, they also define corrosion categories and protective durations that are tuned to real atmospheric conditions. Additionally, associated evaluation and certification procedures are specified.

Both standards apply to piece coatings in the workshop. However, they do not apply to reinforcement steel for components for reinforced concrete. Other protective functions, such as protection against microorganisms, chemicals, mechanical stress, or fire, are also not covered.

DIN 55633 – Powder Coating on Galvanized Steel or KTL

DIN 55633 is a German standard that deals with quality assurance in the field of corrosion protection. It contains requirements for corrosion protection systems, their testing, and ground rules for surface preparation and their final acceptance. DIN 55633 sets specific requirements for powder-coated components on hot-dip galvanized, uncoated, or cathodic dip primed (KTL) materials that are exposed to atmospheric corrosion stress.

Corrosion Categories

Corrosion Category Examples of Typical Environments
C1 very low corrosivity Heated buildings with a neutral atmosphere
C2 low corrosivity Atmosphere with low pollution levels, unheated buildings with potential condensation occurrence
C3 medium corrosivity City and industrial atmosphere with moderate sulfur dioxide exposure, production areas with high humidity and air contamination
C4 high corrosivity Industrial atmosphere with moderate salt exposure, chemical plants or comparable conditions
C5 very high corrosivity Industrial areas with high humidity and aggressive atmosphere, areas with constant condensation or heavy contamination
CX extreme corrosivity Offshore areas and industrial areas with extreme humidity and aggressive atmosphere

DIN 55634 – Coating of Thin-Walled Components

DIN 55634 is another standard that focuses on quality assurance in the field of corrosion protection. It specifies requirements for the corrosion protection of structures and steel components and describes the requirements for carrying out corrosion protection measures. DIN 55634 is applicable to the corrosion protection of load-bearing components made of unalloyed or low-alloyed steel. It covers powder-coated materials with a nominal sheet thickness of less than 3 mm, either on hot-dip galvanized material according to DIN EN ISO 1461 or without metallic coatings, which are exposed to atmospheric corrosion. Additionally, Part 2 of this standard regulated a certification process that requires regular monitoring of the coating process.

Legal Compliance

Certification ensures that the coating company complies with applicable regulations and standards, providing additional security to customers.

Your Path to Certfication

The certification process for DIN 55633 and DIN 55634 typically involves the following steps:

  1. Application:
Before certification according to DIN 55633 / DIN 55634 can take place, the IFO Institute's certification body must assess the feasibility in terms of the scope of both standards and technical practicability. If no obstacles are found, the corresponding preparation begins.
  2. Preparation:
The company prepares for certification by aligning in-house production controls with the standards, by reviewing processes, and by ensuring that all requirements are met.
  3. In-House Production Control:
The coating company creates all relevant documents and records to demonstrate compliance with the requirements.
  4. Laboratory Inspection and Review:
The independent certification body of the IFO Institute, accredited according to ISO/IEC 17065, conducts inspections and reviews of test panels to determine the company's conformity with the requirements.
  5. Certification:
After the successful inspection and review of the test panels, the certification body accredited according to ISO/IEC 17065 makes the certification decision. The company then receives the official certificate according to DIN 55633 / DIN 55634.

Differences between DIN 55633 and DIN 55634

The two standards, DIN 55633 and DIN 55634, differ in several aspects. Here you can find a brief overview of the differences between both standards:

DIN 55633

  • Applies to powder coatings on steel, galvanized steel, and KTL with a nominal sheet thickness over 3mm.
  • Regulates powder coatings exclusively.
  • The application area covers components exposed to atmospheric corrosion stress.

DIN 55634

  • Applies to coatings on thin-walled components with a nominal sheet thickness below 3 mm.
  • Regulates both liquid and powder coatings.
  • The application area covers components exposed to atmospheric corrosion stress.

Differences between DIN 55634 and DIN EN ISO 12944

The DIN 55634 and DIN EN ISO 12944 standards provide requirements for corrosion protection through coating systems on unalloyed and low-alloyed steel. However, these standards differ significantly in several aspects:

DIN 55634 - Liquid Coating and Powder Coating

  • Applies to load-bearing steel components with a thickness below 3 mm.
  • Regulates corrosion protection for thin-walled components.
  • The assessment process focuses on delamination.

DIN EN ISO 12944 - Liquid Coating

  • Applies to components with a thickness over 3 mm.
  • Regulates corrosion protection for components in general.
  • The assessment process focuses on red rust.

Duration of Certification According to DIN 55633 / DIN 55634 and Additional Requirements

Certification according to DIN standards 55633 and 55634 can take approximately one year from application to certification. In special cases, this duration may be shortened, but it requires thorough preparation. Timelines must be taken into consideration. The different durations of the laboratory tests depend on the desired corrosion category. The achieved corrosion categories are confirmed on the certificate. Certification for both standards can also be conducted separately. The standards can be assessed and certified individually. Additonally, the DIN 55634 standard can be applied to coil coating.
