Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres – Salt spray tests in acc. with DIN EN ISO 9227/ASTM B 117

The salt spray test is used to determine the corrosion behaviour of metallic or non-metallic components (e.g. coating materials) at an accelerated rate. For this purpose, a corrosive atmosphere is created in a chamber by spraying a sodium chloride solution (NSS test). The corrosivity of the spray medium can be intensified by adding acetic acid (AASS test) and copper chloride (CASS test) to the sodium chloride solution.
