Standardisation of functional coating systems
Effective corrosion protection in steel construction is essential, and ISO 12944 sets out clear standards for this. These standards are divided into six different exposure categories, known as C1–C5, and have recently been expanded to include the CX category, which is specifically relevant to offshore applications.
But what about steel structures that have to withstand the most extreme conditions? In the world of corrosion protection, there is more to consider.

Voluntary certification for liquid coating and powder coating
Certification offers a wide range of benefits for quality infrastructure in Germany, Europe and worldwide. For companies, certification serves primarily as confirmation of their professional expertise. It builds confidence in the quality of their products or the services they offer and enables them to stand out from the competition.

Corrosion tests for “green” aluminium
Around ten years ago, the coatings industry was concerned when the first attempts to use recycled aluminium alloys in the architectural sector came to light. There were fears that coated products might exhibit corrosion problems in the field, which could cause damage to the coatings industry. However, a series of trials and corrosion tests carried out for the architectural sector demonstrated that the anticipated problems with recycled aluminium did not arise. In some test series, secondary aluminium even performed better.

Certifications in the field of liquid coatings in accordance with DIN EN ISO 12944
The certification body of the IFO Institute for Surface Technology, which is accredited to ISO/IEC 17065, has extended its accreditation to include further voluntary certification programmes. With immediate effect, the Institute is offering impartial and independent certification for coating companies specialising in liquid paint.
Certification is carried out in accordance with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 12944 and is available to all companies that apply liquid paint to steel. DIN EN ISO 12944 deals with the protection of steel by coating systems and takes into account all key aspects relevant to adequate corrosion protection.

Premature corrosion on sharp edges
A new case has been contributed by the IFO Institute to the ‘Besser Lackieren’ expert network. On a powder-coated cover plate, flaking of the coating with underlying corrosion was observed. A crack in the coating and a dark sheen along the edges were also noticeable. The component was manufactured from stamped and folded sheet steel.

QUBUS and IFO celebrate 90 years of expert know-how
At a company celebration held at the premises of QUBUS Planung und Beratung Oberflächentechnik GmbH and IFO Institut für Oberflächentechnik, the management congratulated seven of the company’s employees on their long-standing loyalty and commitment. Coming from different divisions of the company, the employees – Anja Franck, Ute Brunner-Bäurle, Benita Gegner, Sabine Endreß, Wiebke Schmid, Martina Reichl and Nils Paetzke – have played a key role in shaping the company’s success over the last 10 years through their dedication. With the 20th anniversary of Marc Holz, Managing Director of IFO, this brings the total to 90 years of expert knowledge.
“The dedication that every employee has shown to the company during this time, together with their many years of professional experience and expertise, are of immense value to our group of companies, particularly in the current climate,” said Christian Deyhle, Managing Director of QUBUS. The employees celebrating their anniversaries were honoured and celebrated for their contribution to the company’s success.

IFO Managing Director Marc Holz celebrates the company’s anniversary
Marc Holz’s 20th company anniversary also marks 20 years of expertise and commitment to surface protection and corrosion protection. Marc Holz has been working for the IFO Institute for Surface Technology for 20 years and was head of the IFO laboratory for many years, subsequently taking charge of expert services, research and development, until he took over as managing director of the laboratory competence centre in 2016. Together with Michael Müller, co-founder and managing director of the IFO, Holz has been jointly managing the globally active testing institute for the past six years.
Above all, the further expansion of laboratory expertise, both nationally and internationally, is currently a key priority for IFO and a task to which Holz has dedicated himself. „In addition to our core market in Germany, strong demand from our international customers is driving the development of our group of companies, and it is an exciting and rewarding task to shape and advance our unique network together with our staff at the various locations,“ said Holz, looking ahead to the coming years.
